Israel and Morocco have agreed to advance their diplomatic relations to a new stage. The two sides decided to convert their liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv into full-fledged embassies and appoint ambassadors.
The agreement was reached during a trilateral meeting in New York between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. The meeting reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening Israel-Morocco relations.
Israel and Morocco restored diplomatic ties in December 2020 under an agreement brokered by the United States and linked to the Abraham Accords.
The countries plan to finalize agreements on investment protection and the avoidance of double taxation by the end of 2026. The measures are expected to facilitate bilateral investment and strengthen trade ties.
The sides also agreed to expand direct air links. Moroccan airlines are expected to operate flights between the two countries, while high-level reciprocal visits are planned in the coming months.
Gideon Saar said the statement identified “practical ways” to strengthen relations between the two countries and noted that they would work toward its implementation.
Since restoring diplomatic ties, Israel and Morocco have expanded cooperation in trade, tourism, security and defense. The 2020 agreement was accompanied by the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, a territory subject to international dispute.
