Andoni Iraola commented on the decision to overturn a penalty during the Premier League’s seventh-round match between Brentford and Liverpool. Referee John Brooks officiated the game at the Gtech Community Stadium, where Liverpool won 2-1 away from home.
Brentford’s Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 44th minute. Munoz equalised in the 62nd minute, and Alexander Isak scored Liverpool’s winner in the 70th. Yarmoliuk was sent off in the 45th minute of added time in the first half, while Janelt was dismissed in the 90th minute of added time.
“I think Dango Ouattara touched the ball. It’s unlikely that it was a penalty. VAR should not intervene in incidents like that either, because the situation was clear. I remember the penalty in our game against Nottingham Forest this season. We were told it was not a penalty and that VAR would not intervene.
“I think the situations were very similar, and I would not call this a penalty. After watching the replay, I saw that Dango Ouattara touched the ball slightly. Based on what I was told about the Forest game, this was the same situation, and I don’t think VAR should have intervened,” Iraola said, according to Liverpool’s official website.
