The Iranian Navy has detained two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, citing unauthorized movement and threats to maritime safety. According to reports, the vessels were intercepted after allegedly violating shipping protocols and were subsequently escorted toward the Iranian coast.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reported, citing foreign media sources, that the detentions took place following warnings from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The UKMTO had previously reported two instances of vessels being fired upon by forces identified as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) within the vicinity of the Strait.
This development follows a period of intense military and diplomatic escalation in the Middle East. On February 28, military operations were initiated against Iran by the United States and Israel, involving strikes on several cities and leading to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. While a ceasefire was reached between Iran, the US, and their allies on April 8, 2026, the agreement expired on April 22 after a round of negotiations in Pakistan failed to produce results. US President Donald Trump has maintained a firm stance, with Washington previously announcing potential blockades of Iranian ports. In response, Tehran has declared the Strait closed to vessels bound for Persian Gulf countries, a move that continues to fuel a volatile global energy crisis.
