Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has addressed the status of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, confirming that the document is currently awaiting parliamentary ratification.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Araghchi stated that the Convention was submitted to the parliament by the previous administration in 2019 for review and final decision.
The Foreign Minister noted that the other four littoral states bordering the Caspian Sea have already ratified the Convention. Consequently, the final adoption of the agreement by Tehran remains contingent upon the approval of the Iranian parliament.
Araghchi further emphasized that regional partners, including Russia, are advocating for the swift implementation of the agreement. A key provision of the Convention is the prohibition of any foreign military presence in the Caspian Sea, a measure designed to ensure regional security and stability.
The Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, signed in Aktau in 2018, serves as a landmark agreement aimed at regulating the use of the sea's resources, environmental protection, and security protocols among the five littoral states: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.
