Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a Togo-flagged tanker that attempted to pass illegally through the Strait of Hormuz.

The reports said a fire broke out aboard the vessel after the attack and that the tanker was stopped.
They said the vessel had attempted to pass through the strait without Iran’s permission, allegedly as a result of incitement by US forces.
Representatives of the IRGC said they maintained full control over the strategically important strait and would not allow any aggressor to pass through it.
“Illegal passage through the Strait of Hormuz will lead to nothing other than the destruction of a vessel violating the rules,” the statement said.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant share of global oil shipments passes through the waterway, making security and navigation there an issue of international importance.
