“Iran presented a new proposal to Washington during a meeting with US officials this week mediated by third parties.”
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the remarks.
According to Araghchi, Iran proposed that the Strait of Hormuz be reopened and that talks on ending the large-scale war resume within seven days.
He said the current proposal is similar to a memorandum of understanding agreed by the parties in June:
“Under the proposal, the United States must fulfill certain conditions within seven days for talks to resume and the Strait of Hormuz to reopen.”
The Iranian foreign minister said Tehran was awaiting Washington’s response. He said Iran was not in a hurry, but believed it would be better for the United States to accept the proposal and for talks to resume before the midterm elections scheduled for early November.
An unnamed US official told journalists that Washington was holding positive and constructive talks mediated by third parties.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, making any disruption there a matter of international concern.
