Iran and Oman have agreed on the geographic coordinates of dedicated maritime routes to ensure the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told Press TV.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, according to Baghaei, the new navigation coordinates jointly established by Muscat and Tehran will soon be submitted to the relevant international maritime organizations.
Earlier, Mohammad Reza Naghdi, an adviser to the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said Tehran intended to completely halt the operation of what he described as illegal shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Since February 28, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been almost paralyzed amid US and Israeli strikes on targets in Iran and Iran’s retaliatory measures. A memorandum on ending military operations was signed in June, but the resumption of reciprocal strikes has kept tensions high in the region. The crisis in the strait, a key transit route for global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, has caused fuel prices to rise sharply on world markets.
