President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Head of the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation Ramzan Kadyrov visited Baku White City on October 10.
The President’s Press Service told the “Operative Information Center-OMM” about the visit.
Ruslan Sadikhov, executive director of the Baku White City project, briefed the head of the Chechen Republic of Russia on the facilities created there.
It was noted that the area was formerly known as “Black City.” After more than 150 years of contamination from oil industry waste, and once home to numerous oil ponds, the site has been transformed into a modern residential district through a major environmental project launched on the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan.
Implementation of the Baku White City project, described as one of the world’s most prominent examples of modern urban planning, began on December 24, 2011, with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva.
The project was designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable, and to follow “smart city” principles. Baku White City features wide internal streets, green spaces and contemporary international sculpture, and incorporates the latest urban-planning innovations.
