Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of committing a criminal sexual act against former assistant Miriam Haley, according to the BBC.
Haley told the court in a victim impact statement that the assault had a “devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away”.
Weinstein appeared in court in a wheelchair. He denied the allegations but apologised to “anyone I may have hurt by my actions”.
Weinstein’s legal cases
Weinstein has already spent six years in prison while the cases against him have proceeded. He also has a separate conviction for sex crimes in Los Angeles.
He has faced three trials in New York over allegations of rape and sexual abuse. Weinstein was initially convicted and sentenced in Haley’s case in 2020.
In 2024, New York’s highest court overturned that conviction, ruling that Weinstein had not received a fair trial. He was retried and convicted again in the case last year.
Case that helped fuel the #MeToo movement
Weinstein was a prominent Hollywood producer and a former head of Miramax, the studio behind films including Shakespeare in Love.
Reports published in 2017 detailed allegations of sexual assault against him spanning decades. The revelations helped spark the global #MeToo movement.
