A New York court sentenced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison on Wednesday after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting Miriam Haley, a former production assistant, in 2006, according to NBC News.
Weinstein, 74, attended the hearing in a wheelchair and continued to deny the accusations. He apologized to anyone he may have hurt, the report said.
Judge Curtis Farber said Weinstein had used force against Haley and had never accepted responsibility for his actions. After completing his prison term, Weinstein will be subject to five years of monitoring and will be required to register as a sex offender.
Haley told the court that the assault had seriously affected her life.
Case that helped fuel the #MeToo movement
Weinstein was once one of Hollywood’s most influential figures. His companies produced or distributed films including “Pulp Fiction”, “The King’s Speech” and “The Artist”. He also won an Academy Award as a producer of “Shakespeare in Love”.
His career collapsed in 2017 after investigations by The New York Times and The New Yorker detailed allegations that he had sexually harassed and assaulted women for years. More than 80 women, including actresses and former employees, have since accused him of sexual misconduct.
The reports helped trigger the global #MeToo movement, in which women shared accounts of sexual harassment and abuse, often involving powerful men in business, politics and entertainment. The movement prompted investigations and dismissals in several countries.
Weinstein’s long legal battle
Weinstein was arrested in 2018 and has remained in custody. A New York jury convicted him in 2020, and he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. New York’s highest court overturned that conviction in 2024 and ordered a new trial.
During the 2025 retrial, jurors again found Weinstein guilty in Haley’s case but acquitted him of a separate criminal sexual act charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. They failed to reach a verdict on a rape charge involving former actress Jessica Mann. A third trial on that charge also ended without a verdict, and prosecutors decided in June not to pursue the case again.
Weinstein also faces a separate case in California. A Los Angeles court convicted him in 2022 of rape and two counts of sexual assault and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. A California appeals court upheld the convictions but ordered him to be resentenced, overturning the original sentence.
