The government of Greenland has issued a formal warning to the US-based oil company Greenland Energy regarding unauthorized oil exploration activities on the island's eastern coast.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Greenland's Department of Industry and Minerals stated that the company deployed heavy machinery to the Jameson Land region without securing the required regulatory approvals.
Local authorities have emphasized that no drilling operations will be permitted in the area without explicit official authorization. The incident highlights the regulatory challenges faced by international firms seeking to operate in the Arctic region, where environmental protections and local governance are strictly enforced.
Greenland Energy, a company established in Texas last year, claims that the Jameson Land region holds crude oil reserves valued at approximately $1 trillion. Larry Swets, the company's CEO, previously admitted that local residents had been provided with incorrect information regarding the status of permits for the equipment's arrival.
Despite the current dispute, company representatives described recent discussions with Greenlandic regulators as "constructive" and expressed optimism about obtaining the necessary permits to commence exploration work.
This incident occurs amidst a period of heightened US interest in Greenland. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized the island's strategic importance. Greenland Energy has officially stated that its oil exploration projects are independent of US policy regarding Greenland.
