Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has set a new record in the country's political history. Her government, formed in October 2022, has reached 1,413 days in office, surpassing the previous record held by Silvio Berlusconi's second government, which served for 1,412 days between 2001 and 2005.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Italy has seen 68 government changes since 1946, with an average government lifespan of approximately 14 months. Meloni's tenure is widely viewed as a significant indicator of political stability within the nation.
The Italian political landscape is historically characterized by frequent government collapses and coalition realignments. Since the establishment of the Italian Republic in 1946, the rapid turnover of administrations has often complicated long-term policy implementation. Meloni's ability to maintain a stable coalition for this duration marks a notable departure from the typical volatility associated with Italian governance in the post-war era.
Economic indicators have also shown positive momentum during this period. According to data from ISTAT, the number of employed individuals in Italy exceeded 24 million by the summer of 2026, while the unemployment rate fell to 5.8 percent. Additionally, the risk premium on the country's borrowing costs has narrowed from 220 basis points to 80 basis points.
However, structural challenges remain within the Italian economy. Low economic growth, a rapidly aging population, and a shrinking workforce are cited as primary risks. Projections indicate that by 2050, 34.5 percent of the country's population is expected to be over the age of 65.
The next major political test for the Meloni government is expected to be the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2027. Currently, her party, Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia), continues to maintain strong voter support.
