As the 2027 presidential elections in France approach, political discourse surrounding the potential prohibition of headscarves in public spaces has intensified.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, a presidential candidate from the centrist "Horizons" party strongly criticized a proposal during an interview with "France Inter" radio. The proposal, championed by far-right factions, suggests holding a referendum to ban headscarves in public areas should they ascend to power.
The candidate emphasized that while personal views on the headscarf may vary, he does not support a ban. He characterized the initiative proposed by the National Rally (RN) party as unconstitutional and described such a move as a "scandal." According to the politician, fostering confrontation with Muslim citizens poses a significant risk to France, noting that religious freedom is a foundational principle of the Republic and that restricting this right is unacceptable.
It should be noted that National Rally MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy previously announced that if the party wins the elections, they would implement fines for individuals wearing headscarves. This statement has sparked widespread debate across France.
Currently, France maintains restrictions on religious symbols for civil servants, and since 2004, the display of conspicuous religious symbols has been prohibited in public schools. The upcoming 2027 election is particularly significant as incumbent President Emmanuel Macron, who has served two consecutive terms, is ineligible to run for re-election, leaving the political landscape open for new leadership.
