Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said an agreement reached between Denmark, Greenland and the United States respects Denmark’s “red lines”, including the kingdom’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination, according to Danish broadcaster TV 2.
“It has been absolutely crucial for us, with a desire to strengthen security in the very troubled world we live in, that our red lines are respected,” Frederiksen said on Sunday.
Agreement’s details remain undisclosed
She said strengthening security in the Arctic while protecting Denmark and Greenland’s core interests had been central to the negotiations.
“The Kingdom of Denmark is a sovereign state, and the Greenlanders’ right to self-determination must be respected in the future. And what we call our territorial integrity. All of that is contained in this,” she said.
Frederiksen declined to discuss the agreement’s specific provisions before it is formally signed, citing widespread speculation and strong public interest in its contents.
She acknowledged that Greenlanders were particularly interested in what the agreement would mean for them following what she described as a difficult period.
“I would not put my signature, and neither would Jens-Frederik Nielsen, on an agreement that was not good for Greenland and the kingdom,” Frederiksen said.
Signing expected in New York
Frederiksen confirmed that she would meet US President Donald Trump in New York, where the agreement is expected to be signed.
Asked whether she expected Trump to honor the deal, she said she assumed all parties would do so, noting that the negotiations had continued for a long time at both political and diplomatic levels.
Frederiksen described her relationship with Trump as good and said the agreement would strengthen security in the Arctic and across the Atlantic.
She added that the deal would be beneficial from both a European and NATO perspective.
