US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that major oil, gas and mineral exploration was being prepared in Greenland, claiming the island has vast oil resources that are easy to access.
In a post on “Truth Social”, Trump said the exploration was getting ready to begin. He offered no details about the plans or the estimates behind his claim that Greenland could hold some of the world’s largest easily accessible oil reserves.
Trump also described Greenland’s location as strategically important to the defence of the United States and Europe against future attacks, saying it would provide an advantageous position for detecting and intercepting weapons.
His remarks follow a September agreement between Washington, Denmark and Greenland to expand the US military presence on the island, including additional bases and missile-defence capabilities.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within Denmark. The agreement recognised Danish sovereignty and the right of Greenlanders to self-determination.
The island stopped issuing new oil and gas exploration licences in 2021 because of environmental and climate concerns. Licences granted before the halt remain valid.
