Burnham welcomes Greenland deal ahead of first meeting with Trump

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has welcomed an agreement between Denmark and the United States to strengthen security in the Arctic, ahead of his first meeting with US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly in New York this week, according to the BBC.

Burnham and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen discussed the agreement during a call on Sunday, with both leaders welcoming the US commitment to the region, Downing Street said.

What does the Greenland agreement include?

The deal follows months of threats by Trump to acquire or annex Greenland, citing its strategic importance for defence and its mineral resources. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
