Azerbaijan and Armenia have taken significant and decisive steps over the past year to transform peace into a tangible reality for the peoples of both nations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this statement was issued by French Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pascal Confavreux on the anniversary of the Washington summit held on August 8, 2025.
"August 8, 2026, marks the first anniversary of the historic agreement aimed at normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Over the past year, the authorities of both countries have taken significant and courageous steps to make peace a tangible reality for their peoples," the statement noted.
Confavreux emphasized that France hopes the process will continue with the signing and ratification of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the opening of borders, and the development of regional transport links. Such progress is essential for transforming the South Caucasus into a space of full-fledged cooperation and a vital link between Europe and Asia.
He added that France, in coordination with its European partners, will continue to actively support this process, while maintaining full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The normalization process between Baku and Yerevan has been a central focus of international diplomatic efforts in the South Caucasus. Following the restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over its territories in 2023, the focus has shifted toward the delimitation of borders and the establishment of a lasting peace framework, supported by various international mediators.
