Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Israeli intelligence agencies misinterpreted a message they received from Hamas before the group’s October 7, 2023 attack, while opposition leader Yair Golan accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of disregarding warnings ahead of the events.
Gallant told Army Radio on Sunday that a message had reached Israel indirectly through the Shin Bet domestic security agency. It said Hamas would “shake the prisons”, although Gallant did not explain how the message had been transmitted.
According to the report, Shin Bet and the military intelligence directorate, known as Aman, assessed that the message referred to the abduction of Israeli researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov in Iraq. Tsurkov was released in September 2025.
Message reportedly sent weeks before attack
“Channel 12” reported on Tuesday that former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had sent Israel an unusual message weeks before October 7, warning of an expected “earthquake in the prisons” over Palestinian detainees. The report did not identify the intermediary who allegedly conveyed the message.
Golan, who leads the opposition Democrats party, wrote on “X”, the social media platform owned by “X Corp.”, that Netanyahu had received “every warning in the world” before October 7 but “chose to dismiss them”.
Citing investigations by “The New York Times” and Israel’s “Haaretz”, Golan said intelligence about a possible Hamas attack had reached Netanyahu. He claimed that regional leaders had personally contacted the prime minister and that intelligence officials had clearly explained the seriousness of the situation.
Calls for state commission of inquiry
Golan also accused Netanyahu of weakening the Palestinian Authority and silencing people who attempted to warn of an “impending disaster”.
“The first decision we make in the next government will be to establish a state commission of inquiry into the failures of all the systems, foremost among them Netanyahu,” Golan said, adding that the public had a right to know the truth.
Netanyahu has opposed calls for a state commission of inquiry into the events of October 7, 2023. His office has denied a separate report by “Haaretz” alleging that the president of the United Arab Emirates warned him of a major Hamas operation days before the attack.
After the October 7 events, Israel launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip. More than 74,000 people have been killed, around 175,000 injured and the enclave has been left in ruins, according to the source.
