Heavy monsoon rains and resulting floods have continued for several days in Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India.
“Operative Information Center-OMM”, citing foreign media, reports that at least 62 people have died.
The disaster has injured 46 people and damaged more than 1,000 homes. Authorities have suspended the operation of educational institutions in some areas of the state. Rescue teams are evacuating residents of flooded areas to safer locations.
In addition, more than 75,000 people have been evacuated in Odisha, an eastern Indian state, because of the flood threat.
Authorities are continuing rescue operations to keep the situation under control and provide assistance to those affected.
Flooding during India’s monsoon season can disrupt transport, damage homes and infrastructure, and prompt large-scale evacuations. Emergency agencies typically monitor river levels and weather forecasts while prioritizing the rescue of people in low-lying and isolated areas.
