At least five civilians were killed and 47 injured on Wednesday when drones operated by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck a dormitory at Kordofan University in El-Obeid, the Sudan Doctors Network said.
The independent medical group described the reported strike as part of continued RSF attacks on civilians and civilian facilities across Sudan.
Medical group calls for action
The network said targeting student accommodation and educational facilities violates international humanitarian law and puts civilian lives at risk. It also warned of a “worrying escalation in attacks on civilian and public-service facilities.”
It urged the United Nations and international humanitarian and human rights organizations to condemn attacks on civilian infrastructure, hold those responsible accountable and support an urgent medical response for people injured or otherwise affected. The RSF had not immediately commented on the report.
El-Obeid has faced repeated drone attacks
El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, has experienced repeated drone attacks in recent months. On Sept. 20, the Sudan Doctors Network said two people were killed and 20 injured when RSF drones struck several residential areas in the city.
Sudanese authorities and rights groups have accused the RSF of targeting civilian facilities. The paramilitary group generally does not address those allegations directly, while saying it works “to protect civilians.”
War has displaced millions
Fighting between Sudan’s army and the RSF has engulfed the country since April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced.
