Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has called the 1998/99 Champions League final against Bayern Munich the most important match of his career. He told The Observer.
Ferguson said he had yet to win the European Cup at the time and that ending his career without achieving that goal would have been difficult for him. He viewed the trophy as the major missing achievement, while adding that the matches he remembered first were connected more to people than to football.
In the 1999 final, Manchester United were trailing Bayern Munich until the closing moments of regular time. The English side scored twice in stoppage time to turn the match around.
Teddy Sheringham equalised in the 91st minute, and two minutes later Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winning goal. Manchester United secured the Champions League title with the victory.
