Fenerbahce Tarfin defeated Virtus Bologna 78-68 on Friday, while Besiktas lost 96-94 to Valencia in their return to the EuroLeague after 13 years.
Fenerbahce led 23-17 after the opening quarter before Virtus briefly moved in front during the second period. The Turkish side took a 39-38 lead into halftime.
Fenerbahce pull away late
Virtus started the second half strongly and moved 51-46 ahead, but Fenerbahce responded with an 11-2 run to take control. They led 59-55 entering the final quarter.
The Italian side levelled the score at 60-60, but Fenerbahce regained the initiative and opened a 69-64 advantage with less than five minutes remaining. They then pulled away to secure a 78-68 victory.
Talen Horton-Tucker led Fenerbahce with 13 points, while Wade Baldwin added 12. New arrival Braxton Key recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Marcus Carr scored 12 points for Virtus.
Besiktas comeback falls short
Besiktas led 27-19 late in the opening quarter, but Valencia answered with 11 consecutive points to finish the period 28-27 ahead. The Spanish side held a 54-51 advantage at halftime.
Valencia opened the third quarter with a 9-1 run, with T.J. Shorts scoring 10 points in the first four minutes. They entered the final period 81-71 ahead.
Besiktas fought back with a 9-2 run and levelled the game at 86-86 with 6:35 remaining. Scottie Wilbekin then hit a three-pointer to put the hosts 91-86 ahead.
Valencia responded, and Kameron Taylor tied the score at 94-94 with just over two minutes left. With Valencia leading 96-94 in the closing seconds, Eugene Omoruyi and Taylor both missed two free throws before Besiktas had one final possession.
Jaylen Nowell missed a potential game-winning three-pointer, allowing Valencia to hold on for the victory.
Shorts led Valencia with 26 points, while Nikola Mirotic contributed 13. Omoruyi and Nowell scored 17 points each for Besiktas, with Conor Morgan adding 15 and Wilbekin 12.
