Three female lions have died at the Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo due to extreme heat conditions currently affecting Japan. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the animals, ranging in age from 3 to 15, succumbed to health complications directly linked to the soaring temperatures.
Post-mortem examinations conducted on the lions revealed severe dehydration and multiple organ failure, which experts have identified as the primary causes of death. Miwa Kosaka, a representative for the zoo, stated to the BBC that the facility has never encountered such a tragedy before, noting that despite high temperatures in previous years, the lions had not previously exhibited such severe health issues.
The incident highlights the growing impact of climate change in Japan, where summer temperatures are rising annually, frequently exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in various cities. According to zoo records, the first fatality, a 3-year-old lioness named Mugi, began showing a loss of appetite on July 19 and became unable to stand the following day. Despite intensive medical intervention, including cooling systems, intravenous fluids, and vitamin therapy, Mugi died on July 28. Subsequently, 11-year-old Ichigo died on July 31, and 15-year-old Luena passed away on Sunday.
Zoo management indicated that the official cause of death will be confirmed following the completion of laboratory analyses. Currently, two male lions and one female remain in critical condition and are unable to stand; however, they are receiving ongoing medical care. Management reported that some animals are showing signs of recovery, and four others have begun to improve. The remaining healthy lions are being relocated to specialized areas equipped with portable air conditioning units and industrial-grade fans.
Established in 1964, the Tama Zoological Park is a significant cultural and educational institution in Tokyo, housing approximately 260 animal species. Lions have been a central attraction at the park for decades, making this event a notable concern for wildlife conservationists and the public alike.
