Spain plans ban on evictions
The Spanish government has agreed to proposals aimed at banning evictions through 2030. The move follows protests after 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal was forcibly removed from her home in Madrid on a stretcher.
Because the measures were adopted through emergency executive decrees, parliament must approve them within 30 days. The minority government is likely to face difficulties in securing sufficient support for the initiative.
Hundreds detained during school protests in France
More than 400 people, mostly minors, were detained on Tuesday during student protests at secondary schools in several French cities. The students are demanding better conditions and additional teachers.
Police intervened using batons and tear gas. Officials said 48 police officers were injured.
Britain’s return to the EU under discussion
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the BBC that the country’s rejoining the European Union could be considered as part of the government’s efforts to reshape its long-term relationship with Europe.
He made the comments after presenting possible options for the United Kingdom’s future relationship with the European Union at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.
Hearings on Epstein’s connections held in Norway
Norway’s parliament has begun public hearings on convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein’s connections with Norwegian diplomats and politicians. The committee has summoned 11 current and former foreign and development ministers to testify.
Those summoned include Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who served as foreign minister from 2005 to 2012. He says he had no connection with Epstein.
Ukraine seeks to increase military technology exports
Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation Oksana Furchuk said the country wants to significantly increase high-tech exports by using military technologies and digital innovations, including artificial intelligence.
Ukraine is exploring the possibility of signing cooperation agreements with the United States and other countries. World Bank officials have also expressed interest in the initiative.
