A container ship attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz along a route not agreed with Iranian authorities struck a mine and sank.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reported the incident, citing a statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The IRGC said the incident occurred in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz in the morning.

A fire broke out on the ship after the explosion, and the vessel later sank.

The ship was reportedly carrying about 2,500 containers.

No information was provided about the crew’s fate or the identity of the vessel’s owner.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime route linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant share of global oil shipments passes through the strait.
