UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has stressed the need for changes in FIFA leadership. He made the remarks at a meeting of the European Club Association in Copenhagen.
Although Čeferin did not name FIFA President Gianni Infantino in his speech, he criticized initiatives put forward by the organization’s current leadership.
“It is time to say: enough is enough. Imagine someone talking behind your back about selling your assets. Imagine being presented with a peace award without prior notice. Football is bigger than the people who run it. No one has the right to sell its future. Football is not for sale — not today and not tomorrow,” L’Équipe quoted Čeferin as saying.
Infantino has also faced criticism over plans to attract private investment for the World Cup. UEFA, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), and the Asian Football Confederation have rejected the proposal.
The FIFA chief has also been criticized for presenting the organization’s Peace Award to US President Donald Trump. Infantino has served as FIFA president since Feb. 26, 2016. Elections for the organization’s leadership will be held in Morocco in spring 2027.
FIFA, the governing body of world football, oversees major international competitions, including the World Cup. Its presidential elections are held by the FIFA Congress, which brings together member associations from around the world.
