Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Ottawa is checking whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel through Canadian airspace on Thursday.
“I actually have asked my department to provide me with information relating to this particular flyover, which I did not have before coming to the United Nations,” Anand told reporters outside the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, according to CTV News.
Anand declined to say whether Canada considers Netanyahu a war criminal.
“Our position is … to respect decisions of international courts and … to support, at all times, people who are suffering, including in Gaza and Palestine and the West Bank, and to ensure that crimes against humanity are addressed as such,” she said.
Netanyahu’s possible route through Canadian airspace
Anand’s remarks followed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s statement last October that Netanyahu would be arrested if he entered Canada.
As a foreign dignitary travelling on a state aircraft, Netanyahu must request diplomatic clearance from Ottawa at least three working days before entering Canadian airspace.
International arrest warrant
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The court said there were “reasonable grounds” to believe they bore criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu is scheduled to visit New York on Thursday to address the UN General Assembly.
