The official campaign for Bulgaria’s presidential election, scheduled for Oct. 25, has begun.According to the election calendar, 27 candidate pairs will compete for the offices of president and vice president.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Bulgaria’s relevant election authorities announced the information.
Under election legislation, political parties, initiative committees, candidates and their representatives may campaign orally and in writing, at election gatherings and through the media. The campaign will be conducted in Bulgarian, the country’s official language.
According to the Central Election Commission of Bulgaria, the campaign will end at midnight local time on Oct. 23. The first round of the presidential election will be held on Oct. 25.
In accordance with the law, a runoff will be held on Nov. 1 if no result is determined in the first round.
As part of the election process, the Central Election Commission canceled the registration of presidential candidate Aleksandar Tomov and vice-presidential candidate Sergey Indzhov. The decision followed the determination that Indzhov had held citizenship of the former Soviet Union from birth.
The commission said in its decision that candidates for president and vice president must have been Bulgarian citizens from birth and must not hold citizenship of another country.
Following the cancellation of Indzhov’s candidacy, the “Bulgarian Social Democracy–European Left” Party nominated Aleksandar Tsvetanov Garibov for vice president. The Central Election Commission re-registered Garibov’s candidacy together with Tomov.
Bulgaria’s last presidential election was held on Nov. 14, 2021, with the runoff taking place on Nov. 21, 2021.
