The Supreme Court of Brazil issued a verdict on Tuesday against Eduardo Bolsonaro, a former congressman and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The court's panel of four judges unanimously found him guilty, sentencing him to four years and two months in prison.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who currently resides in the United States, faces immediate arrest should he return to Brazil. The Prosecutor General's Office charged him with attempting to influence U.S. officials regarding the ongoing legal proceedings against his father, Jair Bolsonaro, concerning an alleged coup attempt last year.
Prosecutors alleged that Eduardo Bolsonaro lobbied U.S. authorities to impose sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court justices and to levy customs duties on Brazilian goods. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ruled that Eduardo Bolsonaro is barred from holding public office in Brazil for the next eight years. He has denied the charges, claiming his family is being unfairly targeted by the Supreme Court and alleging that he was not properly notified of the legal proceedings.
This case highlights the ongoing political tensions in Brazil following the 2022 presidential election and the subsequent investigations into the Bolsonaro administration. Jair Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest due to health concerns. Eduardo Bolsonaro, who relocated to the U.S. in 2025, maintains that his actions were intended to hold officials accountable for constitutional violations rather than to exonerate his father. He is currently supporting the presidential campaign of his brother, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.
