Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro and ordered the immediate enforcement of his four-year-and-two-month prison sentence, according to information from Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF).
Bolsonaro was convicted in June of using his position as a federal lawmaker to seek foreign sanctions against Brazilian officials, including Supreme Court justices and the prosecutor general. The STF’s First Panel ruled unanimously that he had sought action by the Trump administration while operating from the United States.
The court said Bolsonaro’s actions were intended to pressure authorities and interfere with judicial proceedings. His appeals were rejected, and the conviction became final on October 3, the STF said.
Bolsonaro was sentenced under an initial semi-open regime and also ordered to pay a fine equivalent to 50 daily payments. Brazilian authorities would need to secure his return from the United States for the prison sentence to be carried out in Brazil.
According to Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Moraes also cancelled Bolsonaro’s Brazilian passport. The justice ordered the Superior Electoral Court to be notified that Bolsonaro’s political rights remain suspended while the effects of the final criminal conviction are in force.
Bolsonaro has lived in Texas since 2025. His conviction followed his efforts to lobby the Trump administration to sanction members of Brazil’s government and impose higher tariffs on Brazilian exports during the trial of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The elder Bolsonaro was on trial over an alleged plot to overturn his loss in the 2022 presidential election to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
