Belarus is ready to help facilitate negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov said on Saturday, according to his address to the UN General Assembly in New York.
Ryzhenkov said a sustainable peace would not be possible without addressing issues including plans for Ukraine to join NATO and what he described as the failure to implement the Minsk agreements.
“The implementation of these agreements was sabotaged in order to buy time and allow Ukraine to rearm,” Ryzhenkov said.
Call for negotiations and criticism of arms supplies
The Belarusian foreign minister urged the “speedy start of real negotiations” that could lead to a lasting peace, while criticising the continued supply of Western weapons to Ukraine.
He also called for reforms to the United Nations, including expanding the Security Council to provide greater representation for countries of the Global South.
“The voice of the global majority must be heard loud and clear in the Security Council,” he said.
Belarus calls for broader security dialogue
Ryzhenkov said Belarus regarded the UN as the main universal forum for addressing global challenges, but argued that the organisation needed to adapt to current international realities.
He called for a broader Eurasian security architecture and said Minsk remained open to dialogue with Western countries prepared to engage on an equal basis. Belarus rejected what he called “pressure, dictates, ultimatums and illegal sanctions.”
