Today’s UEFA Champions League league-phase match between Sabah and Borussia Dortmund will be the 16th meeting between Azerbaijani and German clubs in European competitions. So far, only Qarabag and Gabala have faced German teams.
Qarabag have one win in 11 games
Qarabag have faced five German clubs 11 times in UEFA competitions, recording eight defeats, two draws and one win. The Aghdam side lost 4-0 away to Borussia Dortmund and 1-0 in Baku in the 2010/2011 UEFA Europa League play-off round. Their matches against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2013/2014 season ended 0-2 and 1-2.
Qarabag lost 2-1 away to Freiburg and drew 1-1 in Baku in the 2022/2023 season. Four matches against Bayer 04 in the 2023/2024 season produced results of 1-5, 0-1, 2-2 and 2-3. Earlier this year, the team beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 in Baku in the seventh round of the Champions League league phase.
Gabala have four defeats
Gabala lost 3-1 and 4-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the 2015/2016 season. The following season, Mainz 05 won both of their Europa League group-stage matches, 3-2 and 2-0.
Sabah will therefore become the third Azerbaijani side to face a German club. The Sabah-Borussia Dortmund match will kick off at 20:45 today at Baku Olympic Stadium.
