Azerbaijani women’s boxer Banu Chichak Nasirli is preparing for the U-19 World Championships, which will be held in Montenegro from Oct. 16 to 27. It will be her first appearance at the world championships.
Nasirli intends to finish her final year in the youth category with a gold medal. She said she wants to face again at the world championships the Irish boxer who defeated her at the most recent European Championships.
“I want to win a gold medal at my first world championships. I lost to an Irish fighter at the most recent European Championships. In fact, I believe I had the advantage. I would like to face her again at the world championships and prove that I am truly stronger,” the boxer said.
She noted that moving up to senior competition would be difficult and that she would need one or two years to adapt to the new level.
Banu Chichak Nasirli’s achievements
Nasirli is the first Azerbaijani female boxer to win medals at two U-19 European Championships. She has won silver and bronze medals at these competitions. The athlete also claimed the first medal in the history of Azerbaijani women’s boxing at the European Championships among cadets.
Nasirli took up boxing during the COVID-19 pandemic. She previously practiced swimming and judo and said boxing’s difficulty attracted her to the sport. In her free time, she currently plays tennis and volleyball.
Nasirli considers Azerbaijani boxer Elvin Mamiszade her role model. In the future, she aims to win gold medals at the European, world and Olympic championships among seniors, and plans to become a national team coach after ending her career.
