South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and the prime ministers of Japan and Pakistan have arrived in New York to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Lee left Seoul on Monday for a three-day visit to New York City. Shortly after arriving, he visited Koreatown, where he exchanged greetings with members of the Korean community, according to a statement posted on the US social media platform “X”.
During his visit, Lee is expected to outline his administration’s vision for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula and discuss South Korea’s role in addressing global challenges. He is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and seek talks with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
South Korean president to travel to Mexico
Lee will later travel to Mexico for a state visit and talks with President Claudia Sheinbaum. Discussions are expected to focus on trade, investment and supply-chain cooperation, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also arrived in New York after her departure was delayed by about four hours because Typhoon Dujuan brought heavy rain and strong winds to eastern Japan, state broadcaster NHK reported early Tuesday.
Takaichi is due to deliver her first address to the UN General Assembly since taking office. She is also scheduled to meet Trump on Tuesday.
Other Asian countries send senior officials
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York accompanied by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Several other Asian countries are sending their leaders or senior diplomats to the General Assembly. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka for New York early Monday and is scheduled to deliver his first General Assembly address on Thursday.
India’s delegation will be led by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is scheduled to address the assembly on Saturday.
Indonesia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sugiono, who is leading the delegation on behalf of President Prabowo Subianto, according to state news agency Antara.
Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan is expected to represent Kuala Lumpur during the General Debate and reiterate Malaysia’s positions on reform of the UN Security Council and international peace and security.
