Around 40 people were killed or injured on Monday when ballistic missiles struck a military camp in Yemen’s eastern Shabwa province, according to a local official cited by Anadolu Agency.

Shabwa’s deputy governor said the missiles hit the Al-Alam camp in Jardan district. The camp housed new recruits undergoing training before joining the security forces, local outlet Yemen Monitor reported.

Yemen Monitor also cited local sources as saying the initial toll was at least 40 casualties, without giving a precise breakdown of those killed and injured.

A spokesperson for Yemen’s armed forces said the Houthis targeted Shabwa with three ballistic missiles. The missiles struck a training centre for security and police personnel, the spokesperson said, accusing the group of deliberately killing Yemenis across the country’s provinces.

The Houthis did not immediately comment on the reported attack.

The strike comes amid escalating hostilities between the Houthis and forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which is backed by the Saudi-led coalition.

Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and much of northern Yemen.
