The Anti-Corruption Court of Armenia has ordered a two-month pre-trial detention for the country's former president, Robert Kocharyan. The decision follows a series of legal proceedings regarding allegations of high-level corruption and abuse of power.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Sputnik Armenia, the charges against Kocharyan include large-scale money laundering, abuse of official authority, and the acceptance of significant bribes.
Armenian media reports indicate that the court session, presided over by Judge Sarkis Dadoyan, commenced yesterday. Due to health complications, Kocharyan was transported to a hospital under medical supervision, and the proceedings continued in his absence. Investigators allege that during his tenure as president, Kocharyan colluded with other individuals to acquire public and economically significant assets at prices well below market value. In total, six individuals, including Kocharyan and his son, have been detained as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.
Robert Kocharyan served as the second president of Armenia from 1998 to 2008. His political career has been marked by significant controversy, particularly regarding the 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan, which led to multiple fatalities and subsequent long-term political instability in the country.
