An armed attack has been carried out on a correctional facility located in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

Operative Information Center-OMM, citing "Jalisco Noticias," reports that 23 inmates managed to escape the prison as a result of the incident.

The state's Secretary of Public Security, Juan Pablo Hernandez, stated that the incident was recorded at the regional correctional center in the Ixtapa district of Puerto Vallarta. Armed individuals opened fire on the building before ramming the gates with a vehicle to gain entry to the premises. One penitentiary police officer was killed during the attack. Although guards managed to repel the assault, riots broke out within the facility. The situation was eventually brought under control with the deployment of additional security forces.

Relevant search notices have been sent to federal entities to facilitate the apprehension of the escaped prisoners. This incident occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the country following the killing of a leader of the "Jalisco New Generation" drug cartel. Previous unrest in the region reportedly resulted in 26 deaths, with dozens of individuals detained on charges of looting and violence.

Jalisco remains one of Mexico's most volatile regions due to the presence of powerful criminal organizations. Such prison breaks are frequently coordinated by cartels to liberate high-ranking members or to destabilize local governance. Mexican federal authorities have increased security measures across the state as the search for the fugitives continues, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the national judicial and penitentiary systems in maintaining order against organized crime syndicates.
