Germany’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) narrowly led the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Sunday’s state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, according to projections reported by German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.
The AfD, represented by Minister-President candidate Leif-Erik Holm and lead candidate Enrico Schult, was projected to win between 37% and 38% of the vote. That would be more than double its 16.7% share in the 2021 election.
SPD stages late recovery
The SPD, led by Minister-President Manuela Schwesig, was projected to take between 35.5% and 36.5%. The party had secured 39.6% in 2021 but staged a comeback in the final weeks of the campaign.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was projected at 5% to 5.5%, leaving its entry into the state parliament uncertain. If the party fails to clear the 5% threshold, it would record its weakest result in a state election nationwide since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and could miss out on the state legislature for the first time in its history. The CDU won 13.3% in 2021.
Several parties close to threshold
The Left Party was projected to receive between 6% and 7.5%, down from 9.9% in 2021. The Greens stood at around 5.5%, compared with 6.3% in the previous election, leaving their representation in the state parliament uncertain.
The left-wing populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) was also hovering around the electoral threshold, with projections ranging from 4.8% to 5%.
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) was projected to win just 1% to 1.2%, a sharp decline from its 5.8% result in 2021 and a result that would cost it representation in the state legislature.
