Azerbaijan head coach Ayxan Abbasov took responsibility for the result after his team’s UEFA Nations League group-stage match against Liechtenstein ended in a goalless draw in Baku.
Speaking at a news conference, Abbasov said his team had wanted to win but failed to convert its chances or raise the tempo of the game. The result, he said, had made the national team’s situation more difficult.
“We will not look for someone to blame; I am responsible. The players tried, but it did not work out,” the head coach said.
Abbasov said those dissatisfied with the result were justified and that the team should have beaten its opponent. He said the way forward was to win the next match against Lithuania. The coach also said his contract ran until winter and that he would accept whatever decision the management made.
Abbasov said preparations for the next match would not be easy. He said there would be changes in the team and that he would speak with the players, adding that he would not praise their performance in the previous game. He also said the team had the desire to succeed.
The UEFA Nations League is an international competition for national teams organized by UEFA. Its group-stage results determine teams’ standings and can also affect promotion, relegation and qualification pathways.
