A 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck Indonesia.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the tremors were recorded at 14:56 local time at a depth of 131 kilometers.

Indonesia was also hit by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in the morning of August 15.

Authorities said 103 people had died in that incident.

Berton Panjaitan, deputy head of the BNPB Disaster Data Center, said 1,666 people had been injured.

More than 900 houses were destroyed and over 1,300 others were partially damaged as a result of the earthquake.

About 5,000 people were placed in temporary shelters.

Indonesia is located in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, where frequent tectonic activity can cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The impact of an earthquake depends on factors including its magnitude, depth and distance from populated areas.
