Ukraine’s negotiating team is expected to travel to the United States “tomorrow or the day after” for talks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday.
Speaking to journalists in Pryluky, in the northern Chernihiv region, alongside UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, Zelenskyy urged the United States to increase pressure on Russia and bring Moscow to the negotiating table. He pointed to sanctions and financial assistance for Ukraine as possible measures.
“Our team is in Europe today and will be in the United States tomorrow or the day after. I hope the appropriate signals will be conveyed,” Zelenskyy said.
The visit came a day after a Russian missile strike on Pryluky. Local authorities said on Thursday that 22 people had been killed and more than 50 injured.
“My message was clear: we will stand with the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Miliband wrote on “X” after visiting the city with Zelenskyy. He later said he had also met Ukrainian children and families affected by the war.
Asked about recent comments by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Zelenskyy rejected the suggestion that Ukraine was in a diplomatic corner. He said, according to Ukraine’s state news agency Ukrinform, that Russia’s economy should be shut down, its arms industry sanctioned and “Starlink” made available to Ukraine.
In an interview with Greek newspaper Ekathimerini on Wednesday, excerpts of which were published Thursday morning, Rubio described the war as being at a “strategic stalemate” and said there appeared to be no prospects for a negotiated settlement.
