The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised countries not to impose travel or trade restrictions on Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Uganda following the death of an Ebola patient in Nairobi.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on “X” that Kenya had reported an imported case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus. The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the DRC.
The patient fell ill in the DRC and received treatment at several hospitals before travelling to Nairobi via Kampala, Uganda. He died on Monday in Nairobi, Tedros said.
The WHO is supporting the governments of Kenya, the DRC and Uganda with contact tracing, surveillance, screening and other response measures to identify potential cases and prevent further spread of the virus.
“Based on the information currently available, WHO advises against any restriction of travel to, or trade with, the affected countries,” Tedros said, adding that the organisation was closely monitoring and, where necessary, verifying measures related to travel and trade.
