CNN reported, citing unnamed senior Pentagon and intelligence officials, that the United States is considering using the GBU-43/B, known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” in possible military operations against Iran. The report says the weapon could be used if former President Donald Trump authorizes a resumption of military operations ahead of or after the midterm elections.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the potential first use of the MOAB against Iran carries a risk of pushing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East out of control. The weapon is considered the largest non-nuclear strike weapon in the US arsenal. Military experts have also expressed serious doubts about how effective it would be in achieving the strategic objectives Trump has announced.
According to CNN’s sources, Trump has instructed military commanders to update plans for strikes on Iran’s vital energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities, including strategic sites in the Mount Kazma area. The possible use of the MOAB is being assessed as part of these intensified air operations.
According to its military and technical specifications, the GBU-43/B has substantial destructive power over a wide surface area and can exert psychological pressure, but it is not designed to destroy deep underground fortifications or bunkers. The bomb’s large blast radius and shock wave have raised serious international concerns because they could cause heavy civilian casualties.
CNN’s analysis says Washington may be keeping the option under consideration primarily as a deterrent and psychological weapon intended to pressure Tehran into backing down.
