US President Donald Trump has sent a congratulatory letter to President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of May 28 - Independence Day.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the congratulatory message reads:
"I would like to congratulate you and the dear people of Azerbaijan on the occasion of your Independence Day.
Since the historic peace summit held in Washington in August 2025, we have worked together to revitalize our relations, resulting in Vice President Vance signing our Strategic Partnership Charter with you in Baku on February 10, 2026. We are further deepening our partnership in regional connectivity, economic relations, and security cooperation, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration in these and other areas.
The United States continues to support a lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. We are encouraged by Azerbaijan's efforts to advance the peace agreement you initialed in August last year, as well as the ongoing border delimitation process, the release of four Armenian detainees in January 2026, fuel supplies to Armenia, and the 'Peace Bridge' initiative bringing together civil societies of both countries.
We look forward to further strengthening our strategic partnership in the coming years and decades.
I convey my best wishes to you and the people of Azerbaijan."
Independence Day in Azerbaijan, celebrated annually on May 28, commemorates the founding of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918, which was the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world. Bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the United States have historically spanned key areas including energy security, regional stability, and economic cooperation.
