The Trump administration is preparing to impose sweeping economic sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
Under the planned measures, most financial and commercial transactions with the international tribunal would be prohibited after a grace period of six to seven months, the newspaper said.
Proposed sanctions would target entire court
The sanctions would represent a significant escalation of Washington’s actions against the ICC, moving beyond penalties on individual court personnel to broad restrictions affecting the organization as a whole.
According to sources cited by the newspaper, the United States could finalize the executive measures as soon as this week, during the UN General Assembly session, or shortly afterward.
Measures follow ICC arrest warrants
Washington has already sanctioned several tribunal officials, including ICC President Tomoko Akane, under an executive order issued in February 2025. The order declared a national emergency over proceedings involving the court.
The campaign followed the ICC’s decision in 2024 to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
A US State Department spokesman declined to comment on possible sanctions decisions, The Wall Street Journal reported.
