US federal prosecutors have indicted 30 people for their alleged involvement in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, authorities said Sunday.
Reding Quinones, the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, said 18 defendants had been transferred from Haiti to Florida aboard military aircraft to face charges in federal court. The announcement was reported by the source publication.
“Today marks the next major phase in our pursuit of accountability for the assassination of President Jovenel Moise,” Quinones said.
Authorities pursue alleged conspirators
Quinones said investigators would continue pursuing individuals accused of financing, facilitating or committing crimes linked to the killing.
“Five years later, we are still bringing defendants before American courts, and we are not finished,” he said.
Brett Skiles, the FBI special agent in charge, said the suspects carried out the assassination in pursuit of “illicit” business opportunities and contracts. He added that arrests across multiple countries showed that efforts to hold all alleged conspirators accountable were continuing.
Assassination deepened Haiti’s crisis
Moise was killed on July 7, 2021, when an armed commando attacked his private residence in a suburb of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
Haiti’s crisis worsened after the assassination. Gang coalitions seized control of most of the capital, political institutions collapsed and humanitarian conditions deteriorated to levels close to those of a failed state.
