A rocket has struck the helipad located within the grounds of the United States Embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Associated Press released the information, citing security personnel from the diplomatic mission. The projectile landed within the embassy compound situated near the "Green Zone," a heavily fortified area in central Baghdad that houses Iraqi government institutions and foreign diplomatic missions.

According to Iran's IRIB state television channel, the strike reportedly disabled the embassy's air defense system. The incident follows the commencement of military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. In response, Iran has initiated strikes against targets in Israel, as well as locations in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus, where US and allied military bases are stationed.

Under the leadership of US President Donald Trump, the United States has maintained a robust military presence in the region to protect its strategic interests and diplomatic personnel. The "Green Zone" in Baghdad has historically been a frequent target of rocket and mortar fire by various militia groups, necessitating advanced defense systems and strict security protocols to safeguard international diplomats and Iraqi officials.
