Top US and Chinese trade negotiators met again in Washington on Wednesday ahead of a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that the two sides had “some unfinished business from Sunday” as he headed to an unscheduled meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
“We want strategic stability, but it has to be based on reciprocity and fairness,” Bessent said.
Trade talks continue before leaders’ meeting
Bessent and He held high-level negotiations in New York on Sunday focusing on artificial intelligence security, critical minerals and trade issues. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also attended that meeting.
The latest discussions came as Xi was due to arrive in Maryland for a visit to Washington and talks with Trump.
Trump to welcome Xi at military base
Trump is expected to welcome Xi upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington on Wednesday, breaking with six decades of diplomatic protocol.
It will be the first time since 1962 that a US president has personally welcomed a foreign leader at the military base.
