The United States has agreed to a ceasefire in the conflict surrounding Iran after Tehran expressed its readiness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media, US Vice President JD Vance announced the development during an address in Budapest.
"US President Donald Trump effectively issued an ultimatum to Iran. He stated, 'Open the Strait. Stop holding the global economy hostage, and we will agree to a ceasefire.' This is exactly the agreement we reached overnight. The Iranians have agreed to open the Strait," Vance said while speaking at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, an educational institution supported by the Hungarian government. Vance further noted that US President Donald Trump instructed him and the negotiating team to work toward a broader resolution. "If the Iranians are ready to cooperate honestly with us, I believe we can reach a lasting agreement," he added.
The Vice President characterized the current situation as a "fragile ceasefire," noting that the US and its allies have agreed to halt strikes against Iranian targets. He emphasized that while some segments of Iranian society have welcomed the ceasefire, others continue to distort information regarding its implications. Vance warned that US President Donald Trump remains committed to progress but cautioned that "any unfair actions by Tehran will be met with a harsh response."
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategic maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes daily. Located between Oman and Iran, the waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Its closure or disruption poses a significant threat to global energy security and international trade stability, making its reopening a critical priority for the US administration and the global economy.
Military operations against Iran were initiated by the US and Israel on February 28, resulting in the deaths of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. In response, Iran launched strikes against targets in Israel, as well as locations in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus, where US and allied military bases are situated. On April 8, Iran, the US, and their allies reached an initial agreement for a two-week ceasefire.
