UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concluded a three-day visit to Cairo on Wednesday after talks on the military escalation in Yemen and its regional repercussions, according to Anadolu Agency.
During the visit, Grundberg met Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, his office said in a statement.
The discussions focused on “the recent escalation in Yemen and its regional repercussions, including in the Red Sea, as well as UN efforts to end the conflict sustainably,” the statement said.
Grundberg also expressed appreciation for Egypt’s and the Arab League’s continued support for UN-led mediation efforts. His office provided no further details.
UN efforts to ease Yemen tensions
Grundberg arrived in Cairo on Monday as part of diplomatic efforts to reduce the military escalation in Yemen.
Clashes have continued since July between government forces and the Houthis on several fronts, including in Taiz, Lahj, Marib, Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda provinces. The fighting represents the broadest escalation since a relative lull began under an April 2022 truce.
The renewed violence ended the period of relative calm and displaced about 180,000 people, while thousands of others fled to Djibouti, according to UN and government figures.
Yemen conflict and territorial gains
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthis seized Sanaa and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Fighting intensified in September, when the Houthis captured several key areas in Al-Hudaydah and Taiz provinces, including the strategic city of Mokha. Their forces also reached Mayyun Island, which overlooks the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
